Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need to address the imbalance in global green energy investments, which disproportionately benefit developed nations, during his address at the International Solar Festival 2024. He urged the world to democratize solar technology to ensure that developing countries, particularly small island nations and the least developed countries, have equal access to clean energy resources.

Speaking at the event organized by the International Solar Alliance (ISA), an organization committed to promoting solar energy globally, Modi stressed the need for a collective effort to overcome the disparity in green energy investments. He highlighted the importance of making solar technology accessible to marginalized communities, women, and youth, ensuring they are included in the global energy transition.

Modi’s call to action reflects India’s commitment to the ISA, which currently includes 119 member countries working together to expand solar power as a key solution for a carbon-neutral future. His message underlined the importance of empowering vulnerable regions by facilitating access to affordable and sustainable energy sources, which can drive both economic development and energy security.

During the same event, India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, reiterated India’s dedication to supporting the global South in advancing renewable energy projects. He acknowledged the role of solar energy in India’s clean energy success story and encouraged other nations to follow suit, positioning solar power as a catalyst for change in the global energy landscape.

ISA Director General Ajay Mathur also highlighted the transformative power of solar energy, which is growing at a rapid pace and playing a significant role in uplifting economies and empowering communities. He noted that while solar investments are concentrated in a few developed nations, the push toward global inclusion is stronger than ever.

The International Solar Festival 2024 underscored four central themes: the role of youth, communities, women, and the private sector in driving the clean energy transition. The festival aimed to inspire action toward innovative financing, technology deployment, and capacity building to ensure solar energy’s global reach.

Modi’s remarks come at a crucial time, with global efforts ramping up to meet climate goals and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources. His emphasis on democratizing solar technology reflects a broader vision of making clean energy affordable, accessible, and equitable across all regions of the world.
